In Hawaii, a visitor fell into a volcano from a 20 meter height - and survived

According to representatives of the National Park Service, this week a man fell into a crater of a volcano in Hawaii. He miraculously survived, but was seriously injured.

The incident occurred on 1 May in Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii. The visitor climbed over the metal railing, lost his balance, and fell from an 300-foot (91-meter) rock.

A park clerk said this man was trying to get to the edge of a cliff. Another visitor called the ambulance staff, and the search and rescue team began to look for a man.

Approximately two and a half hours after it became aware of the fall, a search party on a narrow ledge in 70 feet (21 meter) from the edge of the cliff found the man "alive but seriously injured," the park service said in a statement.

The victim was lifted from the ledge and taken by plane to the hospital on the island.

The last fatal fall in the park occurred in October 2017.

“Visitors should never climb over safety barriers, especially around dangerous and unstable cliff edges,” said Chief Ranger John Broward. “Entering restricted areas can result in serious injury or death.”

Hawaii News Now reports that the victim was a soldier from the Scofield barracks on Oahu.

"He obviously handled the fall remarkably well," said Mathias Kusch, battalion chief of the Hawaii County Fire Department. "Only time will tell what his injuries are."

The fall happened about a year later. after the eruption of Kilaueawhich was the largest and most devastating eruption in Hawaii over the past decades.
