In Hawaii, a man died, falling in a lava tunnel in his yard
In Hawaii, an elderly man died as a result of a fall in a lava tunnel with a depth of 22 feet (6,7 m). Writes about this Time.
Lava tunnels are natural underground channels that allow lava to pass beneath the surface of a lava flow, sometimes several miles from the eruption site. Once the lava moves away, it can leave behind massive caves underground.
Police arrived at the man’s house in Hilo in response to reports that he was “not seen or heard for several days.” Officers found that he had fallen through a "soft patch of land in a lava tunnel in his yard."
Police officer Robert Wagner said the man was probably “cutting branches” when the incident occurred.

The rescue team of the city’s fire department was able to enter the tunnel and pick up the body.
The police will not disclose the identity of the deceased until he notifies the next of kin and conducts identification.
An autopsy revealed that the victim "died as a result of injuries associated with the fall." The police believe that this was an accident, but they will still investigate the matter to exclude the possibility of an intentional murder.
