What are the taxes of Americans spent on?

April 18, when the filing of tax returns ends, many American taxpayers are likely to ask themselves: what exactly are taxes paid for?

Edition The Wall Street Journal tried to answer this question by contacting the Committee responsible for the federal budget (CRFB), a non-partisan non-profit organization in Washington.

According to the CRFB, half of all spending goes to social security benefits and health care programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, and another 20% for defense and military payments.

Over the past 5 years, the proportion of social security spending Medicare and Medicaid increased by more than 15%. Social and health insurance increased mainly due to the aging population, while the increase in expenditures on Medicaid is due to rising health care costs, known as Obamacare.

Over the same 5 years, the share of funds allocated to the needs of national defense fell by 22%. This was partly because Congress reduced military spending in the 2011 year, according to the CRFB.

Tax figures include all federal income. Personal income taxes account for nearly half of the total, at 47%, while payroll taxes account for about one-third, at 34%. The rest of the profit comes from taxes on corporate income - 9%, customs duties and excise taxes - 9% and other fees.

Budget statistics show the dilemma that President Trump and Congress will face. According to forecasts, the target social insurance fund will be exhausted through 17 years due to insufficient funding of the program by at least 20%.

In the new budget, the Trump administration has planned an increase in defense spending by 10% ($ 54 billion) compared to last year. Budget money will be spent on the purchase of US Navy ships, F-35 fighter jets and the maintenance of military aircraft of the country's Air Force

In addition, the costs of the Ministry of Homeland Security will increase. This includes the cost of the wall on the Mexican border, the additional hire of 500 border guards and 1000 migration officers.

The increase in defense and security costs will entail a reduction in the financing of state structures.
