A Pacific walrus calf, estimated to be about a month old, arrived at the Alaska Marine Life Center on Aug. 1 after being spotted on Alaska's northern slope about 6 km from the Beaufort Sea.
The location where the nearly 63-kilogram calf was found was unusual, as Pacific walruses are commonly found in the ocean or along western coastlines. The Center said it was unclear how the animal got so far inland.
This is the first walrus patient in four years and one of only 10 walrus patients ever hospitalized in the Center's 25-year history.
Walrus cubs depend on maternal care for the first two years of their lives. But when this baby was found, there were no adults in sight.

“It was obvious that the wayward little walrus would not last long without help,” said the staff of the institution.
The cub was transported to the base, where he spent the night under constant supervision, and then taken by plane to the Alaska Marine Life Center.

The veterinary team was concerned about the baby's malnutrition, dehydration and cloudy eyes. A blood test confirmed that he was dehydrated and may have been fighting an infection.
Veterinarians provided 24-hour care for the baby - with constant cuddles to help him stay calm and develop healthy. The 24-hour cuddles are designed to mimic the maternal closeness that baby walruses are accustomed to.
The foundling remains under constant supervision, he eats well and gradually recovers.
