After the attack, Master Sergeant Seth Michael Plant was taken to an army base hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Alaska Army said.
The report says that another serviceman was wounded during the attack, who was treated for minor injuries and released.
Plant was an infantryman with the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment and worked on the training ground at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER).
“Sergeant Plant was an integral part of our organization,” said Lieutenant Colonel David Nelson, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment. “He was a positive and driven leader who brought joy and energy to the paratroopers who served with him.”
Plant, 30, has received several awards, including the Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

“He always had a smile on his face, he always did his best, and he was an inspiration to all who had the honor of knowing him,” Nelson said. "The loss of Plant is deeply felt in our organization, and we express our sincere condolences to friends and family."
Prior to joining the army in January 2015, Plant, of St. Augustine, Florida, served in the reserves, according to a press release. He arrived at JBER in July 2021.
The she-bear may have been defending herself
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Wildlife (ADFG), the area where Plante was attacked is located in a remote part of the military base. Officials were called to the scene after the attack took place. They found a bear den with two cubs nearby.

“From what we know so far, based on the investigation of the scene and information from other agencies involved, this appears to have been a defensive attack by a female bear protecting her cubs,” said Cindy Wardlaw, a spokesperson for the department. “We are trying to find out everything we can about what happened.”
According to the ADFG website, all three species of North American bear live in Alaska, although fur from the scene suggests it was a brown bear. When animals tend to "avoid or ignore humans," they can be dangerous.
On cameras, it was noticed that an adult bear returns to the den and leaves with the cubs.
"A bear deemed a threat to public safety or involved in a fatal attack must be killed," the ADFG said in a statement.
Army Criminal Investigators are working with Alaska Wildlife Squads, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and other agencies to investigate the attack.
