US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 15, held a ceremony at the White House to sign a document on the normalization of relations between Israel and two Arab states - the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

The President said that the United States and its partners have done more for the Middle East settlement in a short time than their predecessors have done for many years.

Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain will establish embassies, exchange ambassadors, and begin to work together as partners.

According to the president, the three Middle Eastern countries signing the agreement will henceforth cooperate as friends should.

“At least five or six Arab countries will join very soon,” the president said.

“Today we will change the course of history,” he emphasized.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed and Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani attended the ceremony on the south lawn of the White House.

“This peace will finally expand to include other Arab countries and could ultimately end the Arab-Israeli conflict for good,” Benjamin Netanyahu said in Washington.

The agreement between Israel and the UAE was reached on August 13, and last Friday, September 11, Bahrain announced that it will also officially recognize the Jewish state.

According to the agreement, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu agreed to scale back plans to control territories in the West Bank. At the same time, some observers cite the agreement as another sign of a shift in dynamics in the Middle East, with more and more Arab countries moving closer to Israel, leaving the Palestinians isolated.

The Trump administration cites the deal as one of its top foreign policy achievements.

“The UAE and Bahrain have officially signed agreements on the historic normalization of relations with Israel. For the first time in a quarter of a century, a US president hosted a signing ceremony between Israelis and Arabs at the White House,” writes American political scientist Ian Bremmer on Twitter.

“I rejoice over the Israel-UAE, Israel-Bahrain agreements, but neither Donald Trump nor Benjamin Netanyahu mentioned the Palestinians,” tweeted Wendy Sherman, director of the Harvard Leadership Center.

The event was highly appreciated by supporters of the President of the United States, Republican politicians.

“This historic agreement sets a new tone for peace in the Middle East,” Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw tweeted.

“This historic agreement normalizes relations between Israel, the UAE and Bahrain.” - said Republican Senator Ted Cruz.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, in response to a recent VOA question, said he supports normalization of relations between Israel and the Arab countries, but also expressed the view that "Israel must be ready to work towards a true two-state solution."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi noted that this is an important day in history, but stressed that it is necessary to clearly understand all the details of the agreements.

“While we are receiving additional information about the details of both agreements, questions remain, in particular regarding the guarantees the UAE received for the purchase of US-made F-35 aircraft. The US Congress will observe and monitor on a bipartisan basis to ensure that Israel maintains its qualitative military superiority in the region,” she said.

Pelosi also stressed that it is important to fully understand the details of the agreements on Israel's announced cessation of efforts to control territories in the West Bank.

“The House of Representatives continues to support real and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” the speaker added.
