A man was fined for “like” on Facebook
For the first time in history, a 45-year-old resident of Switzerland was fined for liking a social network. Facebook.
A court in Zurich ordered him to pay a fine of 4 thousands of francs ($ 4100), writes with the BBC.
In 2015, an unnamed Swiss person liked comments from activists who accused the head of the Animal Welfare Association, Erwin Kessler, of racism and anti-Semitism.
In response, Kessler sued not only the authors of the comments, but also those who “liked” them, explaining that “liking” promotes the publication and makes it visible to more users.
The judge added that “like” implied approval, and the defendant thereby demonstrated his agreement with the content of the offensive comments.
In 1998, Kessler himself was sentenced to a short prison term after he publicly compared the ritual slaughter of animals according to Jewish traditions with the crimes of the German Nazis.
However, the court noted that after almost 20 years have passed since the sentencing, the defendants have no reason to accuse Kessler of racist and anti-Semitic views.
