A man carried out a series of shootings in Texas: 6 people died

On December 5, a gunman killed two and injured one in San Antonio, Texas. On the same day in Austin, he shot and killed 4 people and wounded two police officers. The suspect is now in custody, reports CNN.

The male suspect has been charged with capital murder and additional charges are expected, Interim Austin Police Chief Robin Henderson said at a news conference. Police have not released the name of the suspect.

On the morning of Dec. 5, a gunman allegedly shot and wounded an Austin Independent School District officer before killing a man and a woman several miles away from the first incident, investigators said. He then allegedly shot and wounded a man on a bicycle and then wounded an Austin police officer who was responding to a burglary call at a home where police said two people were later found dead.

Bexar County, where the first two victims are believed to have been killed, is about 128 miles southwest of Austin. The suspect was related to those killed, but police did not tell the victims who he was.

“I want to emphasize that APD and other law enforcement agencies did not make a connection between these incidents until the latest incident occurred this evening. The male suspect was taken into custody, Henderson said.

How events unfolded

Two people were killed in Bexar County before the suspect traveled to Austin, the sheriff said.

Police were sent to inspect the house and saw a water leak, so they decided to force their way inside. They found a "pretty gruesome crime scene" inside - two people had been shot dead.

“This is a very quiet family. The gentleman who lives in the house, he is very involved in the community, in policing the area,” police said.

Around 10:40 a.m. in Austin, a school resource officer was shot and wounded near Northeast Early College High School. The officer was shot in the leg and was in stable condition, Austin Independent School District Police Chief Wayne Snead said.

A little over an hour later, Austin police responded to "multiple calls for assistance" about 20 kilometers from the high school.

“Callers reported hearing gunshots and stated there were two possible victims,” police said. “Our officers arrived on scene at approximately 12:04 p.m. and found the bodies of a man and a woman inside the home with obvious signs of trauma to their bodies.”

The third incident in Austin occurred around 16:57 p.m., "when Austin 911 received a call at 5701 West Slaughter Lane" about a male cyclist who said he had been shot. The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Henderson Police Chief said.

About two hours later, a police officer responding to a burglary call in southwest Austin was wounded in a shootout with the suspect. The officer had non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect was not injured, Henderson said.

The suspect fled the robbery scene in a vehicle and was pursued by police. The suspect crashed the vehicle around 19:14 p.m. and was arrested. He had a firearm on him.

In the house into which the criminal entered, police found the bodies of two more victims.

The suspect was taken to the Travis County Jail and charged with capital murder.
