A man massacred in the Paris subway: 6 people were injured, one of them received 20 stab wounds

On January 11, an attacker wounded six people with a sharp metal awl at the Gare du Nord train station in the French capital, and then was neutralized by police, reports APNews.

The Paris prosecutor said investigators had not yet been able to identify the attacker.

The suspect attacked several people, including a police officer, during the morning rush hour "for no apparent reason," Paris prosecutor Laura Becco said in a statement. The policeman shot the attacker three times. He was sent to the hospital in a critical condition.

Bekko said the attacker underwent surgery at the hospital after being shot twice in the chest and once in the right arm. Investigators were unable to question him because of his condition, she said.

The identification process is still ongoing as the suspect has been registered under several names in the fingerprint database based on his statements in previous cases involving him. This suggests that he may have been born in Libya or Algeria, according to the statement. He is about 20 years old.

The statement described his weapon as "a metal awl, the longer part of which ends in a point."

The victims were two men aged 36 and 41, three women aged 40, 47 and 53, and a 56-year-old police officer, Bekko said in a statement. On the evening of January 11, only a 36-year-old man remained in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the report.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, who visited the scene of the attack on the same day, thanked the police "for their efficient and courageous response."

“Without extremely quick intervention, there would certainly have been deaths,” he said, detailing how the suspect was neutralized within one minute of attacking his first victim.

“At 6:42 the first episodes of the attack were described. At 6:43 am, the police used administrative weapons,” he said.

Darmanin said the attacker's weapon was probably homemade. He said the suspect reportedly did not say anything at the time of the attack and investigators did not find any extremist connections.

According to Bekko's statement, the preliminary investigation found that the suspect threw himself at a man in front of the train station, inflicting about 20 wounds on him.

The assailant then entered the station and attacked four civilians and a police officer, according to French media.

The screams alerted two other police officers who intervened when the suspect attacked the officer. According to Darmanin, the French border guard officer was shot in the back, but was not seriously hurt because of the bulletproof vest.

The police opened a case of attempted murder. The authorities did not establish any specific motives. France is still struggling after a series of deadly terrorist attacks since 2015.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, inquiring about the reaction of Secretary General António Guterres to the attack in Paris, said: "We condemn this attack with all our hearts and call for a speedy investigation into this incident."
