A man massacred a kindergarten in China: 6 dead

At least six people have been killed and one injured in an attack on a kindergarten in Lianjiang county in southern China's Guangdong province. Writes about it with the BBC.

“Among the victims are one teacher, two parents and three students. One suspect was arrested,” a spokesman for the city administration said.

The attack happened at 07:40 local time. The attacker was with a knife.

Police said they have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of assault and are investigating the cause of the attack.

Such attacks are relatively rare in China, but in recent years there has been a spate of knife attacks in the country, particularly in schools.

Last August, a knife attacker broke into a kindergarten in southeastern Jiangxi province, killing three people and injuring six others.

In April 2021, two children died and 16 were injured during a massacre in the city of Beile in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

In October 2018, 14 children were injured in a knife attack on a kindergarten in Chongqing, southwest China.

What is the reason

In most cases, the perpetrators are men, who thus demonstrate dissatisfaction with society. Similar cases have been observed in other countries, from the US to Japan. But experts say there may be additional reasons for the increase in mass attacks in China at this time.

Among them is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced Chinese cities to endure long and severe lockdowns. Their consequences are not yet well understood, but can cause feelings of anger, resentment due to the loss of a job, investment, and relationship.

Other possible factors are stress and high expectations. Youth unemployment is high and the gap between the rich and the poor is widening.

One expert said that strong feelings of "social deprivation" can lead to violence as a way of expressing dissatisfaction with society.

Chinese authorities have been beefing up school security since 2010. Following the attack in April 2021, the Ministry of Education also authorized emergency evacuation training in schools.
