Moscow grandmothers will teach Russian to foreigners via Skype

Moscow grandparents will help foreign students learn the Russian language. Svetlana Pavshintseva, co-founder of the “Language of Generations” project, spoke about this.
The idea of the project is that single pensioners will communicate via Skype with students from other countries who are learning Russian. Thus, foreigners will not only be able to practice communication, but also learn the peculiarities of Russian culture and mentality. The project started in September of this year.
“Our pensioners have lived long and interesting lives. They will be able to talk about it, share their wisdom, and make up for the lack of communication. And thanks to them, students from other countries will be able not only to practice their language skills, but also to learn about our culture, history and way of thinking,” said Pavshintseva.
Activists launched a site, where students of foreign universities can get acquainted with the idea of the project and leave a request. In addition, the initiative group is currently negotiating with several non-profit organizations in the capital that work with retirees. Volunteers will meet with grandparents who want to chat with foreigners, and then pick up students and help them set up video chat.
“15 students from England, France, the USA, China and Thailand have already submitted applications for participation through our website page. By the end of the year we want to expand the project and gather more people. We hope that we will have 30 pairs of participants by the end of the year,” she noted.
Pavshintseva emphasized that the project has a purely social orientation, which is why the authors of “Language of Generations” work for free.
