Scammers have access to personal data of tens of thousands of Obamacare clients
Earlier this month, hackers cracked a government-owned computer system that interacts with HealthCare.gov, putting personal information about 75 000 people at risk, officials said Friday.
Medicare and Medicaid centers made an announcement late in the evening before the weekend, writes Voice of America, adding that bad news is often published before the weekend.
Officials said the hacked system was shut down, and technicians are working on restoring it before 1 registration begins in November in accordance with the Law on Accessible Assistance.
About 10 million people use the HealthCare.gov system in accordance with the law on the health care of former President Barack Obama.
Consumers applying for subsidized insurance must provide extensive personal information, including social security numbers, income and citizenship or legal immigration status.
The system that was hacked is used by insurance agents and brokers to directly register customers. All other registration systems work.
CMS spokesman Jonathan Monroe said "nothing happened" to the HealthCare.gov website used by the general public. “The issues relate to agents and brokers, for which data is not publicly available,” he explained.
Federal law enforcement agencies have been warned, affected customers will be notified and will be provided with credit protection.
Earlier, President Donald Trump promised to cancel Obamacare, but failed.
