'Kids could get seriously ill': US Customs intercepts brushes with dangerous lead content

Cute to look at, but very dangerous - in Baltimore, US customs officials intercepted a shipment of children's folding hair brushes that contained 25 times the legal limit of lead.

A consignment consisting of roughly 800 brushes was detained in Baltimore, Maryland, by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Products were sent for chemical analysis 22 May, when arrived from China, writes New York Post.

The brushes, decorated with images of unicorns, cupcakes and flowers, were listed as “hats, gloves, hookahs” on the customs declaration.

In June, the 2019 of the Consumer Product Safety Commission conducted a product analysis and found “dangerous” lead levels in excess of 2500 parts per million. According to officials, normal levels, according to US law, should be no more than 100 parts per million.

“Any parent knows that young children have a tendency to put toys and accessories in their mouths. Some children could have become seriously ill from these hair brushes, which contain dangerous, excessive amounts of lead, if Customs and Border Protection had not intercepted them,” said Casey Durst, director of CBP in Baltimore.

“Intercepting dangerous consumer goods at ports of entry is a CBP trade enforcement priority,” the official added, “and we remain committed to ensuring the health and safety of American consumers.”
