Connection with Ukraine: how an immigrant from Donetsk popularizes embroidery in the USA
In Dallas, Texas, Ukrainian Elena Jacobs has opened a store of Ukrainian clothing and jewelry, as well as an embroidery workshop. This is how Elena from Donetsk popularizes Ukrainian culture among Americans, writes "Voice of America".
“This is such an interesting, magical process. It's called computerized machine embroidery - you load the design and this machine stitches all these different colors,” says Elena Jacobs, the store's owner.
Elena began to develop a passion for embroidery gradually. It all started when Elena, who had immigrated from Ukraine to the USA, wanted to order embroidered shirts.
“When I wanted to order clothes and embroidered shirts for my children, it turned out that it was quite difficult, very expensive, took a long time, delivery was unreliable and things could get lost,” recalls Elena.
Then the woman began to think herself why not create her own online store. The final impetus for the implementation of the idea was the Euromaidan.
“I was worried, I let it go through me, it was a very significant event in my life. And I decided that any business that I decide to start should be connected with Ukraine, so that I can help Ukrainian entrepreneurs,” admits Elena.
The next step was the creation of a website for Ukrainian clothing. Elena found about 20 enterprises from different regions of Ukraine and offered cooperation. Over the five years of the site's work, Ukrainian clothing has been bought by the Ukrainian diasporas of the USA, Canada, Japan, and Mexico. Elena often gave money to help volunteers. Also, a native Donetsk woman completely abandoned the Russian language and began to support Ukrainian traditions in her own family.
“My mother is the most patriotic person I know. Everything she does revolves around Ukraine. This includes cooking and celebrating Ukrainian family holidays,” said Alexey, Elena’s son.

Subsequently, Elena decided that it was necessary to popularize Ukrainian culture among Americans. Therefore, for the money earned from online sales, she opened a traditional store and an embroidery workshop.
Natalya and her husband Arun came to choose the embroidered shirt.
“There are many types of embroidery here, representing different regions of Ukraine, so we really liked it,” says store visitor Natalya Shtanyuk.
And although Ukrainians come here, the main customers of the store are Americans. Elena claims that Ukrainian embroidery is most popular among people from Mexico. After all, they see the similarity of cultures.
“The Mayan Indians are the territory of Mexico, their drawings, their clothes and embroidered shirts are very similar to our Hutsul motifs. It's nice that people of other nationalities are interested. Discussions often arise, because people have never seen this,” said Elena Jacobs.

Here, in addition to clothes, there are ceramics, jewelry, towels, and an embroidery machine. Now Elena, in addition to selling items made in Ukraine, also embroiders to order. The woman believes that it is her mission to promote Ukrainian culture.
