What surprised the immigrant with the service in American cafes
In many American films and TV shows, there is a scene that surprises our people: a character walks into a cafe or bar and orders "as usual." Do these scenes correspond to reality and what does it mean in the USA? "STAFF correspondent" on Yandex.Zen. Next - from the first person.
At these moments, I imagined myself coming to a business lunch at “Il Patio” on Taganka, where, by the way, I was a regular, and declaring from the door that today I will be “as always.” The only possible scenario for the development of events that I could imagine was the bewilderment on the waiter’s face and his silent question whether everything was okay in my head.
After moving to the States, we got into the habit of going to a cafe for breakfast on Saturdays, where every time we took our daughter a Belgian waffle with berries. Twice I asked to replace strawberries with blueberries, but for some reason they changed a banana for blueberries.
- Okay, - I resigned myself. - Apparently my English is even worse than I thought. - And I decided next time to leave everything as it is.
“A Patriot waffle for my daughter, please,” I voiced the order on my next visit.
- Remind me which berries to remove? The waitress clarified.
Bingo! It's practically: "Daughter as usual, please."
I don’t know if it’s worth specifying that Anya was brought a waffle with blueberries and banana, as I asked.

Then there were many more similar cases. As soon as we sat down at the table, they were already rushing to us with a coffee pot, because two black coffees are another invariable part of our breakfast, or they immediately brought hot sauce to my husband - he is his lover.
There was another case that was remarkable for me. I made an order without a menu and completely forgot which side dish options went to the eggs.
- French toast? The waitress clarified.
- Right! - I was delighted. How could it get out of my head?
Surprisingly, according to the menu, the eggs went with standard white or grain bread toasts, but I usually asked to replace them with French ones. And they remembered it.
Even at the supermarket at the checkout, the girl once asked if we had forgotten to take ice cream, because before that we hadn't left without it.
The most remarkable thing about this is that most certainly all these people did not take any special courses and trainings on the topic “How to win customer loyalty”. They just do their job. A job that seems to be loved and appreciated. They look at clients and see them as people.

When you are recognized, you understand that you are not part of the faceless mass. When you are cared for, you feel important and grateful. When you leave such a place, you really want to come back again, even if they mix up the berries on the waffle again.
