Missouri Wants to Create Pregnancy Registry to Prevent Abortions

Missouri Republican Rep. Phil Amato has introduced a bill that would require the state to maintain a database to track pregnant women who are "at risk" for abortion.

This week, the Missouri House Democratic Committee warned on social media about the upcoming bill, HB 807.

"The Missouri House of Representatives Committee on Children and Families will debate a bill that is being touted as adoption reform. In reality, HB 807 would require the state to keep a database of pregnant women."

"We suspect that even conservative Missourians will be horrified by this idea. It is an overreach of government and a horrific, draconian measure designed to intimidate our fellow citizens," the authors of the publication noted.

The bill, called the Save Missouri Babies Act, would create a registry within the Department of Human Services' Maternal and Child Resources Division under the guise of facilitating adoptions.

"The unit is required to create and maintain a central registry of every pregnant woman at risk of seeking an abortion, as well as a central registry of every potential adoptive parent who has successfully passed certain checks. These checks include a biographical review, a housing inspection, and other data confirming their suitability to adopt a child," the bill says.

“The Unit, in carrying out its duties, may share records, information, and results with federal, state, or local child welfare agencies and law enforcement agencies, including those located outside the state,” the document specifies.
