The unified electronic database was a development of previously implemented projects about the Second World War “Memorial” and “Feat of the People”

The Russian Ministry of Defense on Monday opened access to the world's largest Internet portal, “Memory of the People,” about the fate of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War. This was reported to TASS by the head of the military department’s department for perpetuating the memory of those killed in defense of the Fatherland, Vladimir Popov.

“All these open access resources will allow anyone who wants to learn about the exploits or establish the fate of their ancestors who died on the war fronts in the 20th century, find documents and compile a personal family archive. The unified database also contains archival documents and documents on the losses and awards of soldiers and officers of the First and Second World Wars,” Vladimir Popov listed the portal’s capabilities.

The unified electronic database “Memory of the People” was a development of the projects previously implemented by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation about the Second World War “Memorial” and “Feat of the People”.

“The main purpose of the People’s Memory portal,” noted Vladimir Popov, “is to restore the fates of war heroes. The portal provides a search for places of primary burials and documents about awards, service, victories, hardships and hardships on the battlefields.”

The intelligent search system will help you find information about a person. It will search for the necessary information from more than 50 million records in the data bank, suggest how to create a request, help decompose information into the required fields and orient the user on the map at the place where the soldier is called up or leaving.

As part of the “Memory of the People” project, large-scale work has been carried out to georeference all data on the places of birth, conscription, death and last place of service of soldiers and officers, to establish a single chain of destinies of war heroes - from conscription to return home.

“This is a huge job of thousands of people searching for information and structuring historical maps,” the head of the department emphasized. According to the latest data, “irretrievable losses of the Red Army during the period of hostilities amounted to more than 8,5 million soldiers and officers. The burial passports contain information for approximately 2 million people.

The People's Memory portal will show on the map the coordinates of the death of millions of unknown heroes. Descendants will be able to find and visit the places of their last days of life, put new names of fallen soldiers and officers on monuments, and bring back the memory of the heroism of their fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers.
