Migrants separated from children in the USA talked about humiliation and living in cells

In April, the United States introduced a policy of "zero tolerance" towards illegal migrants. Two months later, more than two thousand children were taken away from detained immigrants, who were sent to detention centers for minors. 20 June Donald Trump signed a decree banning this practice. The Federal District Court for the Southern District of California ordered the migration service to return children under five to their parents within two weeks, and the rest within a month. Returned 538 children; the fate of the rest is still unknown.

One of the largest centers of the US Border Guard, where families were divided, is located in the Texas city of McAllen, located on the border with Mexico. Migrants live there in the premises fenced with a metal grid, they are also called cages and dog kennels.

The Los Angeles Times asked volunteers and lawyers of the non-profit organization Grassroots Leadership to send the migrants questions about the conditions in the center - and received a couple of dozen letters from women separated with children.

In most of them, women describe not only their experiences, but also how hard their children endure separation. One of them recalls that she was separated from her 14-year-old son and sent to another temporary detention center. When she was put on the bus, she asked what was going on. To this, according to the woman, the border guards answered her: "Ma'am, your son is not here, he is far away, and you are being deported to your country." She began to cry and beg not to separate her from the child. Then the guards threatened to use a stun gun, and she lost consciousness.

“I swear, sometimes it seems to me that I’m losing my mind,” says the letter of a woman who didn’t call her name. “If you are a mother, you will understand our pain, because the most valuable thing that God has given us, our children, has been taken away from us.” Does the president have no children and he can ignore the pain he causes us? ” She added that she fled from her country with two children because of the fear of death, but in the United States, people like her are “killed alive”, depriving children.

Another woman anonymously said that she was separated from her son, and the medicines she needed (she was HIV positive) were thrown out - and she had to ask them from the doctors of the temporary detention center. She wrote that she did not take the necessary therapy for eight days and was very afraid that she would get sick. “When we were taken to court, we were handcuffed hand and foot, as if we were terrible criminals. Eight hours we were not allowed to eat, ”she added.

One of the most detailed letters was written by a woman from El Salvador. She was separated from her 10 year old son

Here is the whole letter:

“My name is Miriam. May God's mercy be with you. The reason for my letter is this. 1 June 2018, I was separated from my son. His name is Kenneth, he is 10 years old. I fled from our country, El Salvador, because of fear of reprisals and sexual violence from criminal groups. One of these groups, Mara 18, attacked me in a dead end, and out of horror in front of them I was forced to emigrate - with the hope and faith that I would gain protection. Despite the fact that the road was very dangerous and we were at great risk, thank God, we got here unharmed.

My country does nothing to protect its citizens, and many of them die at the hands of criminal groups. El Salvador is awash with such gangs, this is both MS and [Mara] 18. For my son, I am a mother, a father, and I had no choice but to escape to the USA. In El Salvador, they will look for you until they find it. I did not know about the new law, according to which mothers are separated from their children, and how a mother can tell you that this is the hardest and most cruel thing for a mother.

1 June 2018, my son was taken from me, and since then I have not seen him. After 14 days, they let me talk to him [on the phone]. That day he was sick, he had a fever and sore throat. The next time I was given to speak with him only 27 Jun. 14 days of suffering from ignorance of what happened to him, and on June 27 I was allowed to call him again. From the first to the last second of our conversation, he continued to cry, begging to take him away from the place where he was, asked to come back to me, because he feels bad and does not want to be there. I have not seen him for almost a month.

I am a mother, I am desperate, and I beg you, in the name of sympathy, to help me return my boy, because not seeing him, not being with him is unbearable agony and pain for me. 24 Jun talked to me, and 25 gave an answer [about asylum in the USA]. He was negative. I fear for my life and for the life of my son. If you send us back to Salvador, I can’t do anything about it, everything is in God's hands, but I appeal to your compassion, for the love of God, have mercy on me and return my son. He is my only child, a wonderful gift sent to me by God.

I beg those who read my letter, if you have children, you will understand my pain and suffering. My son suffers where he is now, he begs me to answer when he is released and given back to me. And how can I console him if I am locked here and I can do nothing about it. This is a terrible torture - to be unable to respond to the requests of his son, to take him. I pray you, I urge you to help me reunite with my son, please.

Yesterday, June 27, everything got worse, because my aunt, who was supposed to accept us, said that the social worker who was working on my son transferred his case to the hands of another person, and I don’t know who it is. I do not know why he stopped doing this. His name was Gerardo. I do not know who is doing my son's business now. Please, I ask you for help, thank you, God bless you and may God's mercy be with you. ”
