International scandal: in one of the cities of Ukraine, the police collected lists of Jews

Ukraine’s police are investigating a senior official’s request for a list of Jews living in a city in Western Ukraine after allegations of anti-Semitism, writes Fox News. The media of many countries of the world wrote about this incident, and the Israeli ambassador to Ukraine condemned it as an act of anti-Semitism.

A senior police officer in Ukraine announced an investigation and condemnation of an act of anti-Semitism after local police demanded that Jewish residents compile lists of Jewish residents in the city of Kolomyia, located in Western Ukraine.

A letter signed by a regional police officer named Mikhailo Bank was sent to city officials in February, but was not made public until Sunday, May 10.

“The Ukrainian National Police Department demanded that the Jewish community of Kolomyia provide the police with a list of all Jews with addresses and mobile phones, as well as lists of Jewish students at universities with addresses and phone numbers,” said Eduard Dolinsky, head of the Jewish Committee of Kyiv, on Twitter, along with a photo of the letter. , written in Ukrainian.

“This was explained by the fight against transnational criminal groups,” writes Dolinsky.

The Jewish Telegraph Agency (JTA) translated part of the letter, which reads: “Please provide us with the following information about the Orthodox Jewish religious community of Kolomyia, namely: the charter of the organization; a list of members of the Jewish religious community with data, mobile phones and their places of residence. ”

The mayor refused to provide the police with information, the agency said.

The letter prompted Dolinsky's statement of "open anti-Semitism."

“It’s interesting that in 1941 the Ukrainians and the Ukrainian auxiliary police also demanded a list of all Jews,” he wrote on Facebook.

According to the US Holocaust Museum, Ukraine had the largest Jewish population in Europe in 1941, on the eve of the Nazi invasion during World War II. An estimated 1,5 million Ukrainian Jews were killed during the Holocaust.

Soon, the letter was condemned by the Israeli ambassador to Ukraine, Yoel Lyon, who said he brought it to the attention of Ukrainian officials.

“I have received phone calls from senior Ukrainian officials strongly condemning this act of anti-Semitism. We will work together to better inform the police about anti-Semitism,” Lyon wrote on Monday, May 11.

Following Lyon’s participation, General Igor Klimenko, head of the National Police of Ukraine, said he was investigating the situation.

“Any manifestations of xenophobia and anti-Semitism are unacceptable,” Klimenko said in an official statement. “I want to assure the community that we will not allow citizens to be persecuted based on their ethnicity or other characteristics.”
