The International Red Cross has suspended Belarus' membership in the organization

The International Red Cross suspended Belarus' membership in this organization on December 1 because of the leader who illegally transported Ukrainian children to Belarus and visited Donbass wearing clothes with Russian Z-symbols. This is stated in Red Cross press release.

“As of today, the membership of the Red Cross Society of Belarus in the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has been suspended,” the statement said.

The suspension was the result of the Belarusian Red Cross's failure to comply with its request to dismiss Mr. Dmitry Shevtsov from the position of General Secretary of the National Society.

This followed the decision of the Board of the International Red Cross on 3 October 2023 to investigate allegations against the Secretary General of the Red Cross of Belarus due to his statements, in particular regarding nuclear weapons and the transfer of children to Belarus, as well as due to his visit to Luhansk and Donetsk .

Suspension means that the Belarusian Red Cross loses its rights as a member. Any new funding for the Belarusian Red Cross will also be suspended. In addition, the Belarusian Red Cross will not be able to participate in the IFRC General Assembly, or vote or be elected at any IFRC statutory meetings.

Membership of the Belarus Red Cross may be reinstated after the National Society has complied with the decision of the Board in accordance with the recommendations of the Compliance and Mediation Committee. The IFRC's commitments to humanitarian needs in Belarus remain in effect.

In the event of a disaster or significant emergency, the humanitarian imperative will prevail. The Red Cross will assess the situation with authorities and other stakeholders to determine the best approach to provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities.
