The United States launched a campaign for the release of female political prisoners

The list of women political prisoners included human rights activist Leyla Yunus and journalist Khadija Ismailova from Azerbaijan, Uzbek human rights activist Matluba Kamilova, Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, who is being tried in Russia, as well as women from Ethiopia, Iran, China and North Korea. The campaign involves a detailed account of the case of each of these women - within twenty days remaining before the conference. The biography of the prisoners, the reasons for their imprisonment and, of course, the nature of the governments depriving them of their liberty - all this is supposed to be covered in the framework of the program.

As the representative of the United States to the UN, the goal of the campaign is to demonstrate solidarity with the prisoners and their families: the United States intends to continue to support them, putting pressure on governments and seeking the liberation of women who have fought for their rights.

“By naming these women, we are telling their governments and others like them: Empower women, don't jail them,” US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power tweeted.
