Dead and sick dolphins began to massively throw on the beaches of California
An unprecedented number of dead dolphins began to cast ashore in Newport Beach, California. Some of them were so sick that they had to be put to sleep for humane purposes.
"It's a shock and we're saddened," Newport Beach resident Eric Fritz said. - They are our friends. I used to ride waves with dolphins.”
According to the Pacific Marine Mammals Center, over the past two weeks, five ordinary dolphins and one bottle-nosed dolphins have been brought to the shore. This number is quite large compared to one dolphin last year.
Scientists are desperately trying to find the cause.
“These could all be the result of viruses, bacteria and toxins,” said Krista Higuchi of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.
Rescue teams suspect that the culprit could be a dangerous algal bloom, off the coast of Newport Beach. The reason for this flowering was the runoff of recent rains in the region.
“I saw how dirty the ocean was after the rain, it was brown and red,” said Newport resident Noelle Raine.
The state of the ocean is causing concern among local residents. "I see a lot of trash, paper, plastic bags and things like that," said Richard Simon of Newport.
