Mexico is ready to accept refugees from Ukraine, but they do not want to go there

While hundreds of Ukrainian citizens passed through Tijuana, Mexico on their way to the United States in the weeks after the Russian invasion began, Juarez officials say few, if any, pass through north-central Mexico. Writes about it Border Report.

Public and private shelters did not report encounters with refugees from Ukraine or Russia.

“We are ready to help them if we run into them, but so far this has not happened,” said Enrique Valenzuela, head of the Chihuahua City Population Council, which runs the Juarez Migrant Assistance Center.

Valenzuela said that over the past few years, migrants from many parts of the world have passed through Juarez on their way to the US. Haitians, Brazilians, Ecuadorians and, occasionally, migrants from outside the Western Hemisphere come here. The bulk of Juarez's immigrants are Mexicans and Central Americans.

In Tijuana, Mexican officials report the arrival of 487 Ukrainians this year, with the bulk - 310 - arriving in the past three weeks.

As of 2018, over 1,1 million Ukrainians lived in the United States. More than 170 of them lived in New York and 000 in California.
