Bear escaped from enclosure at Missouri zoo twice in a month: visitors had to hide while he was caught

An Andean bear at the St. Louis Zoo, Missouri, has returned to its enclosure after escaping for the second time in a month. The edition told in more detail CNN.

According to a statement from the zoo management, a bear named Ben broke out of his enclosure on February 23 in the afternoon.

But he did not stay long on the street. Zoo officials were quick to implement their "Zoo Animal Emergency Response Protocol", which saw guests and staff escorted indoors while the bear was at a safe distance. The whole operation took about 50 minutes.

This isn't the first time Ben has gone for a walk outside his enclosure.

Earlier this month, he got out "by loosening the steel mesh in the right place", causing it to break, and this allowed him to get out.

Although his enclosure has since been made safer, including the addition of stainless steel cargo clamps rated for 450 pounds (204 kg) of tensile strength, Ben still found a way to get out.

“We know that Ben is young and adventurous. Our team will continue to work with and consult with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Bear Advisory Group to explore other alternative ways to protect his enclosure," the St. Louis Zoo said in a statement.

According to the zoo's website, Andean bears are the only bears native to South America. They live in a wide variety of habitats around the Andes Mountains, from montane forests to coastal scrub.

They are tree bears and their long, strong claws allow them to be exceptional climbers. However, this species faces a high risk of extinction in the wild.
