McDonald's distributes free breakfasts to certain categories of people: who can get them

McDonald's is providing free breakfast for teachers and school staff from Monday (October 11), reports USA Today.

Teachers, school staff, and administration can receive free thank you meals from October 11-15 at participating restaurants across the country during breakfast.

A valid work ID is required to receive complimentary breakfasts to be served in the classic Happy Mealbox with one main course of your choice, potato pancakes and a drink.

The five-day giveaway is "the first big national gesture of gratitude" for McDonald's teachers, said Jennifer "JJ" Hilan, the company's vice president of marketing and content management.

The program was inspired by teacher recognition campaigns at local restaurants and is a continuation of last year's appreciation dinners for people fighting the coronavirus on the front lines, Heelan said.

McDonald's first introduced thank-you dinners in the spring of 2020, in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the two-week campaign, restaurants distributed 12 million meals to medical workers, police officers and firefighters.

“We wanted to build on that idea and thank our educators in our communities for everything they have done and what they do every day,” Heelan said.

Stephanie Cabrera Bentancourt, a former teacher, owner and operator of 18 McDonald's in Miami, believes the gesture will touch the faculty. During the pandemic, her restaurants delivered food to schools and organized McTeachers' Night fundraisers over the years.

“I know it will be greatly appreciated,” she said, adding that teachers have had to refocus and adapt during the pandemic. “This is a great way to bring national attention to the people who are truly the backbone of every profession that exists.”

McDonald's is also inviting fans to join a social media support campaign for teachers using the hashtag #ThankYouMeal on Twitter, TikTok or Instagram until October 15th.

The restaurant chain rebroadcasts some of the most heartfelt messages on their media channels, and local owners and employees surprise teachers by delivering breakfast to their schools.

To receive free meals, instructors must present a valid work ID when purchasing at McDrive or at the checkout. There is a limitation of one set of food per person during breakfast, which may vary by location, but usually ends at 10:30 am.

Choose from egg mcMuffin, bacon, egg, cheese biscuit and sausage biscuits. Choose from hot coffee, iced coffee or soft drinks. Menu options may vary depending on location.

Although the meals come in a Happy Meal box, they will include a thank you note for the teachers instead of a toy.
