McDonald's has not paid taxes on 1 billion euros
The world's largest fast-food chain, McDonald's, was accused of tax evasion totaling 1 billion euros.
The charges were filed by the European and American trade union associations - the European Federation of Public Service Unions and The Service Employees International Union, as well as the charity organization War on Want.
In 2009 – 2013, McDonald’s allegedly forced restaurants under its license to transfer royalties (license fees) to accounts of a division registered in Luxembourg.
Royalties for McDonald's make up five percent of the restaurant’s turnover. According to the calculations of the trade unions, the transfer of these funds to the accounts of the unit in Luxembourg, where there is a preferential taxation, allowed McDonald's to underpay taxes totaling 1 billion euros.
Trade unions and War on Want are asking the European Commission to launch an investigation into McDonald's.
In the European division, McDonald's has so far refused to comment on the tax evasion charges. Earlier, at the headquarters of McDonald's in Europe, they stated that they strictly follow the rules of taxation in each country where their restaurants operate.
