Ukrainian mathematician from the University of Chicago received the prestigious Israeli Wolf Prize

Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Volodymyr Drinfeld and his coauthor Alexander Beilinson were awarded the prestigious Israel Prize of the Wolf Foundation in Mathematics.

Both scientists work at the University of Chicago, Illinois, the site says National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Scientists have been awarded for a series of innovative works on algebraic geometry.

“These are results of primary importance that create a geometric model of algebraic theory that plays a key role in field theory and physical string theory, and thus enhance the fruitful interaction between modern fundamental mathematics and physics. These results were obtained by these authors during joint research under the Langlands program, which occupies an outstanding place in modern theory and is well known among relevant specialists,” the statement says.

The prize, which includes a cash award of $ 100, to thousands of scientists will be personally presented by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in Jerusalem.

Vladimir Drinfeld was born in Kharkov in 1954. For a long time he worked at the Verkin Institute of Low Temperature Physics and Technology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kharkov). His work formed the basis of new branches of modern mathematical science - the theory of Drinfeld modules and the theory of quantum groups.

The Wolf Prize is awarded at Israel с 1978 years Wolf Foundation. The prize is awarded annually in six categories: agriculture, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, physics and art. He has high prestige and is often regarded as the second most prestigious after Nobel Prize (in medicine - after Lasker Prize). Many of the Wolf Prize winners subsequently received the Nobel Prize.
