Mother in Texas left children in a car for the night: she was sentenced to 40 years in prison

A judge in Texas, while sentencing, scolded a young mother, whose two daughters died after she deliberately left them in the car for the night, writes CNN.

“People in our community take better care of their pets than you took care of your children,” Judge N. Keith Williams told Amanda Hawkins.

More than a year after the death of the children, Williams 12 December sentenced 21-year-old Hawkins to 40 years in prison.

Earlier this year, Hawkins pleaded guilty to neglecting children and endangering their lives.

“These sweet little girls would be here today if this tragedy had not happened,” the judge said during the sentencing.

In June, 2017, Hawkins, who was then 19 years old, left year-old Brynn Hawkins and 2-year-old Addison Overguard-Eddy in her car for more than 15 hours, while she and her boyfriend were having fun with friends at home. According to the Kerr County Sheriff, the children stayed in the vehicle from the late evening of June 6 until noon of the next day.

“They were in the house all night. The defendant's friend went out for a while, slept in the car for a while, but then returned to the house,” the Kerr County Sheriff said.

People who were in the house reported that everyone heard the crying of children, but no one went to check how they felt.

Hawkins found the children unconscious in the car after the air temperature reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).

Hawkins tried to bathe the unconscious babies, but then one of her friends advised them to take them to the regional medical center. However, Hawkins did not immediately take the children to the hospital, explaining that she "did not want to get involved in trouble."

When Hawkins and her 16-year-old friend arrived at the hospital with the girls, the doctors said that the children were “in serious condition.”

The police launched an investigation after Hawkins told the hospital staff that she, her 16-year-old friend and children were on a nearby lake where the girls sniffed flowers, and then fell unconscious.

During the interrogation, it became clear that the woman was lying, and soon the whole story was revealed.
