Arriving at the scene, firefighters said they met a man who said that he set fire to the forest. Crews escorted him down the mountain to speak with the authorities. The man introduced himself as Martin and explained that he saw a spider on a mountain and tried to burn it with a lighter, according to police testimony.
“When he tried to burn the spider, the surrounding bushes caught fire and the fire began to spread very quickly,” the affidavit says.
Martin was arrested on the spot and put into a patrol car. The police later found a can of marijuana and drug paraphernalia while searching his belongings, the arrest report said.
On the evening of August 1, the fire spread rapidly. According to Utah Fire Info, a clearinghouse for federal firefighters, as of the morning of August 2, about 24 hectares of US Forest Service land in the Pleasant Grove Ranger District had been burned.
