Stewart, 81, is one of the iconic magazine's latest cover stars for 2023. Before her, the title of oldest woman on the cover was held by May Musk, who appeared in the magazine in 2022 at the age of 74.

“I’m usually motivated by pay. But this time I was motivated by showing people that a woman my age can still look good, feel good,” Stewart told Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. “I thought it was some kind of historical event and I better look good.”

Standards are changing

"It's good for middle-aged and older women to see someone in their age group on the cover of magazines on the shelves at the grocery store or anywhere that a lot of people go," said Holly Thomas, clinical researcher and assistant professor of medicine. .

“It was a big deal when the first black woman appeared in an issue of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit. I remember it was a big deal when they had curvaceous women,” she says.

“We traditionally put our ideal woman on magazine covers, our ideal of what a beautiful woman should be,” Thomas explains. “Over the last 5-10 years, beauty standards have become broader.”

Stewart, 81, will change the way people think about women and their sexuality as they age after appearing on the cover.

“Society generally views older people, especially women, as asexual, as those who are no longer interested in sex. Or that older people's sexuality should be seen as a joke or obscenity or something like that,” Thomas explained, noting that Martha Stewart has proven these ideas wrong.

Stewart herself does not hide her desire to look sexy: "I think people like to look at beautiful things, and if you feel beautiful and can show it, do it."

“Sex is a really important part of life for many older people. So hopefully something like this cover will help a lot of older women feel sexy and imagine themselves that way,” says Thomas.
