The IAEA urged Russia to leave the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is made up of 35 countries, has passed a resolution demanding that Russia end its occupation of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant in Ukraine. Read more about this publication Reuters.

This is the second resolution on Russia's invasion of Ukraine adopted by the IAEA Council. The content of both documents is very similar, although the first of them (in March) preceded the takeover by Russian troops of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant - the largest in Europe.

Both resolutions were proposed by Canada and Poland on behalf of Ukraine, which is not on the IAEA board.

The Board calls on Russia to “immediately cease all actions against and against the Zaporizhzhya NPP, as well as any other nuclear facilities in Ukraine.” This resolution was adopted with 26 votes in favor, two against, and seven abstentions, the IAEA said.

Diplomats said Russia and China voted against, while Egypt, South Africa, Senegal, Burundi, Vietnam, India and Pakistan abstained.

The Council "condemns the continued violent actions of the Russian Federation against nuclear facilities in Ukraine, including the forcible seizure of control over nuclear facilities," the resolution says.

Russia seized radioactive waste facilities at Chernobyl, the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 1986, but later withdrew.

Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of shelling the ZNPP in southern Ukraine.

The Russian mission to the IAEA called the text anti-Russian and "the Achilles' heel of this resolution" is that it did not say anything about "systematic shelling" of the station.

“The reason is simple - this shelling is carried out by Ukraine, which is supported and covered in every possible way by the countries of the West,” Russian representatives said.

The resolution noted that the occupation of the station by Russia significantly increases the risk of a nuclear accident. Ukrainian personnel continue to operate the station in conditions that the IAEA has described as a safety hazard.

“The council first considered this issue in March and adopted a resolution deploring Russia’s violent actions and calling for an immediate halt to all actions against and at nuclear facilities in Ukraine and return control over them to the competent Ukrainian authorities,” the U.S. statement said. .

“The very next day, Russia rejected this call by capturing the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Russia views Ukraine's civilian infrastructure as a spoils of war in an effort to deprive Ukraine of control over its own energy resources and use the station as a military base.
