Macy's will close dozens of stores nationwide in 2021: list
Department store chain Macy's announced a new round of store closings on January 6. Macy's, Inc., which also operates Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury, has named 36 Macy's and one Bloomingdale stores that are expected to close by mid-year or earlier. In which states is expected to close, the newspaper said USA Today.
The spate of closures is part of Macy's three-year plan to close one-fifth of its stores, or roughly 125 locations, which was first announced in February 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic led to temporary store closures from mid-March.
In September, the Chairman and CEO of Macy's, Inc. Jeff Gennett said the timing of permanent store closings could be adjusted as the company monitors competition and recovery from the pandemic.
“With many competitors closing or struggling, we see potential to attract new customers to our brands and increase market share,” Gennett said.
As of October 31, Macy's Inc. there were 764 stores in total, including 544 Macy's, 54 Bloomingdales and 166 Bluemercury stores.
Some of the liquidation sales have already begun, and most of them will begin this month. The closing procedure will last eight to 12 weeks.
