Macy's announced store closings in 2022: list

Macy's plans to permanently close several more stores in 2022. At the start of the new year, the department store chain confirmed a new round of store closures in the United States. Writes about it USA Today.

Macy's Inc., which also operates Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury, has identified six Macy's stores and one Bloomingdale's Outlet to close this round.

“The stores remain an integral part of our omnichannel retail ecosystem,” Macy's said in a statement. “As our business evolves, we continue to optimize our system to more effectively support omnichannel sales growth and increase market share.”

The closure is part of Macy's three-year plan to close one-fifth of its stores, or roughly 125 points, which was first announced before the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020.

In early 2020, Macy's announced the first closure as part of its optimization plan. Another round of closings was announced last January.

Macy's stores participating in the new round of closures are expected to close in the first fiscal quarter of 2022, which in past years ended in late July or early August. Bloomingdale is expected to close by the end of the last quarter of 2021, which is January 29th.

Another Macy's store closings expected

Adrian Mitchell, Macy's CFO, said in November that the retailer “has re-estimated the closure timeline for the approximately 60 remaining stores we previously planned to close” as part of its store optimization plan.

"We previously announced 10 store closures in January, with more details on the remaining stores coming later in 2022," Mitchell said during the retailer's quarterly earnings call, noting that some of the closures had been delayed and that the company continues to open more of its smaller stores outside of malls.

During the Morgan Stanley Global Consumer & Retail conference in December, Mitchell said, "Ultimately, how many stores we close remains to be determined."

In addition to opening smaller stores, including the new Market by Macy's concept, the company plans to open 400 small Toys R Us stores in its stores starting this year.

Macy's slashes opening hours amid COVID-19 surge

As COVID-19 cases continue to increase across the country, Macy's said it is temporarily reviewing opening hours for all of its stores until the end of January.

In January, stores will be open Monday through Thursday from 11:00 to 20:00. Opening hours vary from Friday to Sunday, depending on location.

“The health and safety of our colleagues and customers remains our top priority,” Macy's said in a statement. “We will continue to monitor the situation and follow guidance, and will maintain enhanced safety procedures.”

The following stores will be closed in the next few months. The exact closing dates are not known.

• Alabama — Mountain Brook: Brookwood Village, 614 Brookwood Village
• California - City of Industry: Puente Hills Mall, 1600 S Azusa Ave.
• Colorado - Boulder: Twenty Ninth Street Mall, 1900 28th St.; Centennial: Streets at SouthGlenn, 6801 S University Blvd.
• Missouri - Lee's Summit: Summit Fair, 900 NW Blue Parkway
• Texas - Baytown: San Jacinto Mall, 5000 San Jacinto Mall including Furniture Clearance Center)
• Bloomingdale's Outlet - Estero, Florida: Miromar Outlets, 10801 Corkscrew Road
