'Death trap': a man burned alive in a Tesla electric car

The man who rented the Tesla car burned alive in it. The family sued the company. Lawyers called this car a "death trap." Writes about this Business Insider.

The family of Omar Avan, who burned down in a Tesla Model S in February 2019, sued the electric car manufacturer, claiming that “the Model S was defective and dangerous.”

Avan died after the car turned off the road and crashed into a palm tree. The vehicle caught fire, and family lawyers allege that the policeman and other witnesses at the scene could not reach Avan because the design of the model S door handles prevented them from opening the car doors.

Model S has distinctive door handles that are on par with the car's trim. The handle reacts to the electronic keychain - when you bring it to the handle, it extends and then you can open the electric car. Since none of the witnesses of the accident had a keychain, they could not open the door.

In February, a Tesla spokesman published an emergency response guide for the S model, which states that the car must open from the inside if the door handles do not work.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.

Lawyers representing the Avan family claim that the man did not die from the clash. They say he died from the smoke that filled the car after its battery ignited.

“The design of the S model did not allow those at the scene of the accident to pull Avan out of the cabin,” the lawsuit said. - Model S had an unreasonably dangerous risk of fire that could not be resolved by proper design. And Tesla did not give any proper, adequate, and complete warnings about the risks associated with door handles or a battery fire. ”
