Personal experience: in the United States you can go to jail even for barbecue

My friend once again decided to fry a barbecue with his family on the balcony, and all the neighbors often do it too. He lit a brazier and waited for the coals to be ready.

After 15 minutes, a large fire truck arrived and without warning poured water on his balcony. Firefighters came out and said that if this happens again, they will draw up a protocol. He agreed and they left.

A few hours later, two healthy firefighters arrived with weapons and said that the chief ordered the protocol to be drawn up, as there were violations of the law (the neighbors made a statement).

Having drawn up the protocol, they asked me to sign it, and not only that, but also to record the signature with my thumbprint. The comrade did not argue and did as they said.

After a while, he received a subpoena, he turned to a lawyer for help. The lawyer explained to him that the ban on charcoal barbecues on the balcony was introduced a week ago due to the fact that several high-rise buildings burned down, because coals flew from the wind.

The lawyer said that in court he should not argue and not be indignant, since the judges do not like this and will appoint the maximum punishment.

The comrade came to court, which lasted several minutes. The judge sentenced him: one month in prison and 250 dollars fine. The most interesting thing is that one of the men who was guilty of the fire of one of the houses, the court assigned a fine of 100 dollars and that’s all, since there was no ban on barbecues on the balconies at that moment.

Here is such American justice: it can be said that an innocent person was sent to prison, although, in my opinion, they could have limited themselves to a warning or at least a fine.

In general, US law is such that sometimes people themselves don’t understand why they pay fines or serve sentences in prison, and they can be acquitted of a real crime.
