Personal experience: the flight attendant told which seats are the most comfortable on the plane, and which ones will ruin the whole flight for you

When booking a flight, it is important to choose the right seat. Beth Windsor, a flight attendant with a decade of experience, told which seats are good and which are not on the plane, reports Insider.

After all, the smallest details, such as proximity to exits, kitchens, and restrooms, can make a big impact on your trip.

Best Airplane Seats

Emergency exit row

These seats are usually available at an additional cost, so it is unlikely that people will sit next to you.

They are great for tall travelers as they offer more legroom.

Possible cons:

• The seats by the door are usually cold from the air outside.
• You must also agree to operate the exit door and assist other passengers in an emergency.
• The emergency row is the best place where other passengers gather in the middle of a flight to stretch their legs.
• You must place all your belongings in the top compartment for takeoff and landing.

Some aircraft are equipped with two seats in a row (one window seat and one aisle seat), which provides more space between you and your fellow traveler.

front part

Sitting at the front of the aircraft often contributes to a smooth and quiet flight.

The crew usually starts serving food and drinks there before moving on to the back, making it more likely that you'll get a good selection of food.

This section is located directly above the wings, the most stable part of the aircraft and the center of lift, so positioning here ensures the smoothest possible flight if the aircraft gets into turbulence.

Possible cons:

• This area tends to be a bit noisier due to the location of the aircraft's engines.

Any seat by the window

“The window seat is my favorite place. It offers beautiful, relaxing views that are ideal for distracting those who are nervous,” says Beth.

You will not be disturbed by other passengers when they get up to go to the toilet. You can lean your head against the window pane while you sleep.

Worst airplane seats

Seats directly in front or behind the bulkhead

If you are behind a partition, you usually have to put all your stuff in the top compartment as there is no room in front of you. There is no tray table that you can set up as you wish. Instead, you should ask the crew for a separate table.

It's also a place where strollers are often placed, so if you don't want to hear babies cry during the flight, think twice before choosing a seat behind a partition.

Another disadvantage is that the seats directly in front of the bulkhead do not recline.

Possible bonus:

• If it annoys you that people recline their seats into your space or push your chair every time they use their tray table, then a space behind or in front of a partition is the way to go.

Seats near the toilet in the cabin

There will be other passengers around you, who will be hanging around the entire flight, waiting for their turn to use the toilet. You will not be able to isolate yourself from the noise of the flush, the bright light and, of course, the smell of the toilet.

Possible bonus:

• You may not have to queue for the toilet if you sit in this seat.

Seats at the galley

In the kitchen, the crew prepares all onboard meals and drinks. They are usually located at the front and rear of the aircraft, but on larger aircraft they are sometimes located in the middle as well.

Everything is stored in metal crates and trolleys, so it can be noisy around the galley. In addition, people usually chat there, which adds to the noise. At least one crew member is on duty there for the duration of the flight, which means the lights will be on all the time.

“I especially recommend avoiding galley aisle seats if you don't want people and carts to hit your shoulders and shins throughout the flight,” Beth says.

Rear part

The back of an aircraft is definitely the worst seating position for travelers who hate turbulence, as it is far from the plane's center of lift and gravity.

This area can also be very loud, as some aircraft have engines and auxiliary power units located closer to the rear of the body, which creates a lot of noise.

Any middle place

“Personally, I think that a seat in the middle is the worst thing that can be on an airplane, especially for a solo traveler,” Beth says.

Too often, window and aisle seaters occupy the armrests of an entire row, causing the person in the middle to cross their arms uncomfortably.

Here, you will either be harassed by the person in the window seat when they want to use the toilet, or you will have to harass the person in the aisle seat to use the toilet yourself.

“Good luck trying to sleep unless you're ready to nod off on someone's shoulder,” says Beth.
