Poll: the attitude of Russians to the Soviet regime is better than to the Russian

Russians rate the Soviet government of the late 70s and early 80s higher than the current Russian government, according to a new Levada Center survey.

As noted by Present Tense, the Soviet government during the “stagnation” times, the relative majority of respondents gave positive characteristics:

• 30% called her close to the people,
• 26% - strong and durable,
• 25% - legal,
• 21% - “their own”, habitual,
• 20% - authoritative, respected,
• 18% is fair.

The share of positive definitions of power in this survey was 54%, the website said Levada Center.

In assessing the modern Russian government, the leading answer is “criminal and corrupt”:

• So answered 46% of respondents,
• 31% called the government far from the people, “alien”,
• 28% - bureaucratic,
• 18% - inconsistent,
• 17% - short-sighted,
• 15% - weak, helpless,
• 13% - parasitic.

The share of positive definitions of power in this survey was 32%.

The survey was conducted on 18-24 July 2019 years, it involved 1605 people aged 18 years and older in 137 settlements, 50 constituent entities of the Russian Federation.

According to the director of the Levada Center, Lev Gudkov, such estimates remained the same in all the years when a similar study was conducted, starting from the late 90s.

“The stability of such opinions indicates that we are talking about a structure of ideas that lies deeply in the mass consciousness,” writes Gudkov. In his opinion, “functionally, the idealization of Soviet power serves as a condition for expressing dissatisfaction and a critical attitude towards the current government.”

According to a July poll by Levada Center, 38% of Russians would not like Vladimir Putin to remain president at the end of his current term, 54% were in favor, and the rest of those surveyed abstained from answering.

More than half of Russians (59%), according to another survey, consider the state’s concern for ordinary people to be the main feature of the Soviet era. Also, 54% of Russians are sure that for the people in power in the Russian Federation, the most important thing is not the country's prosperity at all, but the preservation and strengthening of their own power.

According to the April Levada Center survey, in 2019 the total indicator positive attitude towards Joseph Stalin reached the maximum level for all years of conducting surveys. 41% of Russians declared their respect, this is the highest indicator since 2001 of the year. 6% declared sympathy, 4% admiration.
