Laura has already claimed one life in the USA: a child became a victim

The governors of Louisiana and Texas say search and rescue teams are on standby, with no reports of mass casualties yet.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott believes the evacuation of thousands of people prevented deaths in the state. Edwards says they are just starting to assess the damage.

Both governors agree that the storm surge was not as strong as they feared.

Abbott said a "fairly strong" storm surge in east Texas hit the townships of Port Arthur, Beaumont and Orange at night.

Deaths in the Caribbean

Before entering the United States, Laura also hooked on Cuba, as a result of which almost two dozen people died there on the island of Hispaniola, including 20 in Haiti and three in the Dominican Republic, where the hurricane caused power outages and severe flooding. It is reported that among the dead there was a 10-year-old girl whose house was knocked down by a tree - a mother with a small child crushed a collapsed wall.

The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, said that a corporal was killed during rescue operations in the province of Pedernales.
