Who is more: Democrats and Republicans in Congress are competing to care for illegal immigrants

The US Senate has blocked a bill approved by the House of Representatives on the allocation of billion dollars to 4,5 to help illegal immigrants and, above all, unaccompanied immigrant children on the southern border of the United States.

In exchange, Republicans in the Senate offered their version of a bill on humanitarian aid to illegal immigrants, writes with the BBC.

Democrats bill, approved by the House of Representatives on June 25, envisaged an additional allocation of 4,5 billion to solve humanitarian issues on the US-Mexico border, which among other things includes the provision of additional funding for food, water, medical services and increased security for unaccompanied illegal children.

At the same time, the bill contains clauses that prevent the administration of Donald Trump from directing any part of this funding to support the work of immigration and customs officers at the border, which the Republicans and the President, who promised to veto this project if it is adopted by Congress, do not like it.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said the House-approved relief bill was "failing." Instead, the Republican-controlled Senate proposed its own draft, which it is now preparing to vote on.

Democratic leader in the lower house of Congress, Nancy Pelosi, in turn, promised that the alternative bill proposed by the Senate would not pass a vote in the House of Representatives.

However, the difference between the amounts proposed to be allocated by these two bills is small. The House bill called for $4,5 billion, while the Senate bill called for $4,6 billion.

What is the difference between bills

Both bills contain a ban on the use of funding for the construction of a wall on the border of the United States and Mexico. Both of them are mainly aimed at improving the conditions of migrants at the southern border, but part of the money will go to border guards.

The document proposed by the Senate proposes to allocate money from the Pentagon’s budget and contains fewer restrictions on how money can be spent.

In the version approved by the House of Representatives, there are more such restrictions, and the standards for the maintenance of migrants are spelled out more specifically.

Before the bill was passed in the House, it was changed due to the fact that some legislators did not like the fact that the money would be allocated, among other things, to security forces pursuing a policy of “zero tolerance” towards migrants.

Why is it important

There are hundreds of children in the border centers for illegal immigrants, and the conditions in them, according to lawyers and human rights activists, are terrifying.

A group of lawyers recently visited one of these centers under a court order. They reported that the camp was overcrowded and that older children - from ten years old - had to take care of the babies in the absence of adults.

“Many of the people I spoke to have been held there for weeks, some for almost a month. Meanwhile, by law, they must be reassigned within 72 hours,” said Elora Mukherjee, head of the Migrant Rights Clinic at Columbia University Law School.

“Since crossing the border, they haven’t even been given the opportunity to wash themselves, they just stink. They are dressed in the same clothes they crossed the border in, soiled with everything from urine to breast milk,” she added.
