A major city in the United States intends to monthly give $ 500 to low-income residents
Chicago could become the largest city in the United States, which will test the universal program to ensure basic income, if the city government agrees to give 500 dollars a month to some families for free.
The city’s parliamentarians have already expressed support for the idea of introducing a basic income program in Chicago, which, if adopted, will extend to 1000 low-income families in the city, writes T.
The author of the bill was the local parliamentarian Ameya Pawar, who collected 36 signatures from 50 members of the city’s legislature.
According to Pavara, the need to implement this program is dictated by the threat of automating many processes, which may affect the employability of Americans, and therefore such support is necessary to ensure the normal life of most families in the US, who, according to the politician, have very little money set aside for emergency situations.
The draft law is currently being discussed by the City Labor Development and Audit Committee.
If a sufficient number of committee members approve this plan, it will be referred to the city council for voting.
After that, the document will have to be signed by the mayor of Chicago, who, in case of disagreement with this idea, can veto it.
Alaska is already running a universal system of providing basic income, where residents can receive free of charge from the government up to 2 thousand dollars a year. Other US regions are also preparing to test similar programs - the 18 month test of such a project in 2019 will begin in Stockton, California, and 100 families will be involved in it.
