North America's largest diamond publicly exposed in New York
A unique diamond the size of a chicken egg was put on display in New York.
This diamond is the largest ever found in North America, reports ABC13.
A yellow diamond weighing 552 carats (110,4 g) was found in December 2018, at the Diavik mine in the Canadian province of Northwest Territories, owned by the Dominion Diamond Mines and the Rio Tinto Group. The rare mineral was in a diamond mine located in 200 kilometers from the Arctic Circle.
The diamond, which is close to the size of a chicken egg, is the largest ever discovered in North America, and also the largest among all the yellow diamonds in the world (before that, the record holder in this group was a De Beers diamond, weighing 440 carats at the time of its detection in 1888 year).
A diamond exhibited in New York ranks seventh in size among those found in this century and is in the top 30 of the largest gemstones in history.
You can see a diamond in New York from January 31 to February 3 at Philips Auction.
In the future, they plan to sell the stone at auction, but before that, jewelers will divide and polish it, so that its yellow color will “play” as much as possible.
