A cruise ship left 8 passengers on an island near Africa: for several days they have been trying to catch up with the ship in other ports

Eight cruise ship passengers were late to their ship on March 27. They were stranded in the African island nation of Sao Tome and Principe. Now these people are desperately trying to catch up with their flight at another port, reports CNN.

“Eight guests went to the island on a private excursion and did not return on board at the appointed time. Although this is a very unfortunate situation, it is the guests' responsibility to ensure they return to the ship on time. The time to return on board is widely communicated via the ship’s intercom, in daily messages and announced immediately before passengers leave the ship,” explained the Norwegian cruise company.

The company said the passengers' passports were handed over to local port agents for guests to pick up. The cruise line said guests are responsible for travel expenses to the next available port where they can catch up with the ship. Why can you be kicked off a cruise ship - read here.

How did it happen

On March 27, some passengers on the ship decided to go on a tour of Sao Tome and Principe.

"We told the guides we didn't have much time, but they assured us the tour would take an hour," said Jay Campbell of South Carolina, who was on the cruise with his wife.

The tour operator contacted the captain and said that the passengers were already on their way, but were late. When they returned, the ship was still in port. Campbell said the captain did not allow them on board.

“The harbormaster tried to call the ship, but the captain refused to talk,” Campbell noted.

It is reported that among the passengers who were late for the liner were a pregnant tourist and a woman with paralyzed legs. One of the members of this group is an elderly man with heart disease.

Most of them did not have credit cards that are accepted in Sao Tome and Principe. The Campbells spent thousands of dollars on their Visa card on lodging and essentials for the entire group.

Crazy race for the liner

The group of eight stragglers spent 15 hours on the road. They traveled through six countries to try to return to their ship in Gambia on March 31.

But the liner was unable to moor there due to low tide and spent another day at sea. The group will try to reach Senegal, where the ship is scheduled to enter port on April 2.

But this will not be easy.

“We were looking at some kind of van to transport eight people, including a paraplegic woman,” Jay said.

“We will have to take a ferry to get to Senegal,” he added. “But we just found out that the ferry is not working.” In this case, we will take a boat. And then when we get to the other side of Senegal, we have another four hours of driving.”

However, Jay said the journey is worth it.

“We paid a lot for this trip to Africa, so we hope to survive the rest and finish it in Spain,” he concluded.
