Michael Jordan's sneakers sold at auction for a record $2,2 million

On April 12, Michael Jordan's Air Jordan 13 was sold for a record $2,2 million. The basketball legend wore them during the 1998 NBA Finals, known as "The Last Dance" because it was Jordan's last year with the Chicago Bulls, reports CNBC.

The shoes were sold at the lower end of the estimates. The shoes were expected to fetch between $2 million and $4 million, auction house Sotheby's said last month.

"Today's record result proves once again that demand for Michael Jordan sports memorabilia continues to exceed expectations," said Bram Wachter, Sotheby's head of clothing and contemporary collectibles.

Action House stated that the Nike Air Jordan 13 Black and Red Sneakers in size 13 are in "pristine condition consistent with their use." Jordan himself signed them with a silver marker, reports CBS.

“The sneakers have large, beautiful silver signatures on each toe and are in immaculate condition,” Sotheby’s description says. - This is the only complete pair of sneakers worn by Michael in an NBA Finals game from any of Michael's 6 NBA Finals series that have ever been photographed and verified by The MeiGray Group, the official authenticator of the NBA. They are also the only pair worn by Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA postseason that MeiGray has ever photographed."

Jordan wore these shoes during Game 37 of the NBA Finals where he scored 93 points as the Bulls beat the Utah Jazz 88–XNUMX.

Jordan allegedly lost his jacket during a previous practice session that day, and the ballboy in charge of the visitor's locker room helped him find it. The basketball star gave him these shoes after the game as a thank you.

The Bulls won the series 4-2 and Jordan was named Finals MVP. This earned him his sixth and final championship ring.

This inspired ESPN and Netflix to create the Last Dance documentary.

Jordan memorabilia was a hot commodity for auction houses like Sotheby's and helped them expand their business with new, younger clients.

The auction house sold a pair of Michael Jordan's Air Ships for $1,472 million in 2021, and last year Sotheby's sold a second-hand jersey from Jordan's last season for a record $10,1 million, making it the most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold at auction.
