Astronauts stuck on ISS due to problems with Russian rocket: rescue mission postponed due to new failures

Officials from the Russian space agency Roscosmos have decided to postpone the launch of the spacecraft. This ship is designed to replace one that is considered not safe enough to transport astronauts from the ISS to Earth, reports CNN.

After preparation, the new Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft will bring to Earth three astronauts who are currently on the International Space Station. In December, a Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, originally intended for the mission, was found to be leaking coolant.

Roskosmos planned this month, launch the MS-23 replacement capsule and bring home cosmonauts Sergei Prokopiev, Dmitry Petelin and NASA astronaut Frank Rubio.

According to a message in the official Telegram account of Roscosmos, the rescue vehicle will be launched in March.

The postponement decision comes after NASA confirmed that a Russian cargo-carrying spacecraft, Progress, which docked with the space station on Feb. 11, had a similar coolant leak.

“The cause of the loss of coolant on the Progress 82 spacecraft is under investigation,” NASA said in a statement. — The hatches between Progress 82 and the station are open, the temperature and pressure on board the station are normal. The crew, who were informed of the cooling circuit leak, are out of danger and are continuing normal space station operations."

Roskosmos said on Telegram that it would delay the launch of the Soyuz MS-23 while the agency investigates the cause of the Progress spacecraft's coolant leak.

However, the Russian space agency has not suggested that these problems are related. Roscosmos reiterated that the Soyuz MS-22 leaked when it was damaged by an object in space that officials had previously determined was a micrometroid.
