Congress propose to abolish Trump's immigration ban

The bill, submitted by Senator Chris Koons and Member of the House of Representatives Judy Chu, aims to abolish all three versions of the immigration ban adopted by the Trump administration. In addition, he proposes to amend the Law on Immigration and US Citizenship to prohibit discrimination based on religion, as well as to limit the powers of presidents to impose such prohibitions in the future, writes WICZ.

“Right now, there are thousands of American citizens who are forced to live apart from their spouses, whose children will never know their grandparents, and who are prevented from celebrating important occasions with their loved ones because of a Presidential ban that discriminates against Muslims and will not make our country safer. . This ban is the separation of families, but with a different name. It is a stain on America's reputation around the world that goes against our values ​​and hurts real people," Coons said.

Since Trump took office as president, he has signed three executive orders, in accordance with which a ban was imposed on visiting the United States for residents of countries with a predominantly Muslim population. The first two versions were blocked by the courts, but the third version, which imposed various levels of restrictions on citizens of Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Somalia and Yemen, was supported by the Supreme Court in 2018 year.

The law caused the rejection of more than 37 000 applications for US visas in the 2018 year.

Although the bill to repeal the ban has little chance of passing the GOP-controlled Senate, it has the support of 32 Democrats in the Senate and 63 in the House of Representatives. Not a single Republican in either chamber supported the bill.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, recalled her own experience of living in refugee status. Lobster, a native of Somalia, one of the countries to which the restrictions apply, according to the current ban.
