Congressmen want to ban Americans from having dogs and cats

US lawmakers have put forward a bill banning dogs and cats from eating, but not because Americans eat their pets.

According to supporters of the initiative, the goal of the proposed measure is to support international animal rights activists, writes Chicago Tribune.

If the bill is passed, the ban will give a clear signal that the United States condemns the sale of dog and cat meat in East Asia.

Only six states in the United States expressly prohibit the consumption of dogs and cats: Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, New York, Virginia and California. In other states, general animal protection laws are used to prosecute those who kill and eat dogs.

If the bill is passed by Congress, then deliberately killing, buying and selling meat for dogs and cats for food will be considered a criminal offense. Violations will be punished with a fine or imprisonment of up to one year.

But supporters say that the importance of the bill is not in punishment, but in its symbolic power.

According to Humane society internationalIn China, South Korea, India, Vietnam, and Indonesia, dog meat organizations operate, although South Korea is the only country where dog farms operate for human consumption.

This practice is limited, and its popularity is declining, but dog meat is still on the menu of several restaurants in Asia, which is of concern to animal advocates.
