Congress filed criminal charges against Trump because of the storming of the Capitol: now the word is up to the Department of Justice
At a meeting on December 19, the U.S. House Committee to Investigate the Storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 voted to file criminal charges against the 45th President, Donald Trump. The committee referred Trump's case to the Justice Department for criminal charges of inciting an uprising and conspiring against the government to undermine the 2020 election, reports The Guardian.
The committee's recommendations, approved by its members on December 19, are the first time in American history that Congress has recommended criminal charges against a president. This comes after more than a year of investigation by a bipartisan panel of the House of Representatives. She was instructed to figure out what really happened on January 6, 2021, and what was the role of Trump in this story.
On the subject: Trump found several more secret documents that he illegally took from the White House
“The committee believes there is more than enough evidence that Trump provided assistance to those who participated in the violent attack on the Capitol,” said Congressman Jamie Raskin. “The Committee has gathered significant evidence that President Trump intended to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power under our Constitution.” The President has a fundamental constitutional duty to act to ensure that the laws are faithfully executed. Nothing could be a greater betrayal of this duty than aid in rebellion against the constitutional order.”
The committee charged Trump with violating four federal criminal laws, including those related to obstructing the official work of Congress, inciting an insurrection, and conspiring against the United States.

However, the Committee's findings are merely recommendations. Next, the word is up to the Ministry of Justice
The Committee's findings have no consequences for Trump. The Department of Justice should initiate a criminal investigation. Therefore, the Committee called on the Department of Justice to investigate this matter, as well as attempts to obstruct the investigation, including by "certain attorneys ... who may have advised clients to make false or misleading statements to the Committee."
Attorney General Merrick Garland last month instructed seasoned prosecutor Jack Smith to determine whether Trump should be charged with instigating an uprising and his efforts to disrupt a peaceful transition of power.
On December 21, the group is expected to release a detailed account of the attack on the Capitol, which killed five people and opened about 1000 criminal cases.
