Congress condemns Trump for racism: what now awaits the president
The US House of Representatives passed a symbolic resolution condemning President Donald Trump for attacking four non-white Democrats, whom he offered to go where they supposedly came from.
The non-binding resolution was largely due to the votes of a democratic majority in the House of Representatives. Only four Republicans, contrary to the party line and the direct appeals of their president, joined the Democrats.
The document, passed by a vote of 240 to 187, censured Trump for "racist remarks that legitimize the growing fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color."

Trump denied the racist overtones of his statements the day before.
The scandal began from Trump's tweets, which everyone in the United States perceived as directed against a group of four young Democrats who were first elected to Congress last November: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib. Trump tweeted that they hated America and came from countries with collapsing economies.
Trump advised them to return home. In fact, all of them are US citizens, and of all four, only Ilhan Omar was born in another country - in Somalia, but has lived in the US since childhood.
The Democrats themselves on Monday called Trump's attacks as an attempt to divert attention and called for criticism of the president’s policies, not his statements.
Without exception, all Democrats in Congress voted in favor of a resolution condemning Trump. For them, it became a way to cement the unity of the faction in the face of sharp disagreements between the party leadership and the four young democrats.

In particular, all four are in favor of impeaching Trump - Rashida Tlaib, at a meeting with her constituents shortly after winning the election, stated this even in unprintable terms - while Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders in Congress consider this idea at least ill-timed , devoid of prospects under Republican control of the Senate and unpopular with voters.
Before voting, Republicans tried to challenge Democrats' attempts to attribute racist intent to Trump's statements through various procedural maneuvers.

According to most polls, only about 40% of Americans approve of Trump’s activities, but the level of support for the president varies greatly depending on party preferences. Among the republican electorate, the president is much more popular, and all politicians in the party who criticized him too zealously have either lost the election in recent months or left big politics without waiting for defeat.
