Columbia University will release a hundred Russian books in English

In the framework of the “Russian Library” project, the publishing house of Columbia University will release 100 Russian books translated into English.

The project is designed for several years, the first were already published works of Andrei Sinyavsky, Sasha Sokolov, Ilya Zdanevich and Andrei Platonov, reports “Voice of America".

So far, translations of 4 books have been released, 1 more will be released in August, and 2017 more in the fall of 4. Then it is planned to release 5 books a year.

Deciding which books to translate into English will be the editorial board, which includes American and Russian experts.

According to the literary critic Vsevolod Bagno, Russians and Americans have different ideas about what Russian books are worth reading to residents of the United States, but they are trying to find compromise options.

There will be a lot of prose of the XX and XXI centuries, there will also be several “rare and unexpected” books of the XVIII and XIX centuries.

The project is supported by the Moscow Institute of Translation and the Russian state agency Rospechat.
