The number of riotous passengers on flights to the United States continues to grow

Incidents with unruly passengers are on the rise again, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). CNN.

FAA figures released on Tuesday show commercial flights have had more disruptions in the past week than in any week in the past two and a half months.

The FAA says flight crews reported 128 new incidents, bringing the total number of incidents this year to 4626. The new number is the highest weekly number since the FAA began publishing weekly data on July 20.

According to statistics, over the past week, about 72% of the problems were associated with violation of federal requirements for masks in transport.

Earlier this year, the FAA adopted a zero-tolerance policy for unruly, sometimes aggressive, passengers on board aircraft.

The agency has offered more than $ 1 million in fines this year against unruly airline passengers.

One $ 45 fine, announced in August, was charged against a passenger accused of throwing his luggage at another passenger and, while lying on the floor in the aisle, "grabbed the flight attendant by the ankles and tucked her head under her skirt."
Another passenger did not wear a mask, the FAA said, and "acted as if his hand was a pistol and made a bang-bang sound, as if he were shooting another passenger."

Guns and mask mandates are a problem for TSA

The rise in unruly passenger behavior, reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is due to the fact that airport security personnel find weapons more often than before the pandemic, even though the number of people traveling is still declining.

At the end of September, the head of the Transportation Security Administration, David Pekoske, said that his agency had found about 7900 weapons, including firearms, including 4500 that he called "living weapons," such as a loaded weapon.

The TSA usually only voices the number of firearms its officers find. TSA found 3257 shotguns last year, 83% of which were loaded. That's less than the 2019 record of 4432 firearms, but air traffic in 2020 was significantly lower due to the pandemic.

At the end of September, TSA verified about two-thirds of the volume, which was verified at the same time in 2019.
“These are big numbers,” Pekoske said at a conference held by the regional airline association. “The rate per million passengers is now much higher than two years ago.”

He said officers also seized more than 3200 items banned from aircraft cabin, such as knives and throwing stars.

At the same time, TSA officers deal with mask compliance issues and agitated or aggressive travelers. Pekoske said 110 TSA officers were attacked this year.

At the time, he declined to say whether the mandate for the masks would expire in January or if it would be renewed again. The TSA has received a report of 3 violations.
